Makrana White Marble is one of the most prestigious and purest forms of marble in the world. Famously used in the construction of the Taj Mahal, Makrana marble is known for its milky whiteness, strength, and timeless appeal. At Tanwar Marble Handicrafts, we work exclusively with authentic Makrana marble, and we often get asked—how can one tell if the marble is truly Makrana?
In this blog, we’ll share some expert tips to help you identify genuine Makrana White Marble and avoid cheap imitations.
1. Pure White or Slightly Greyish Tone
Authentic Makrana marble usually comes in a milky white color with minimal grey or brown streaks. It’s naturally glossy and reflects light beautifully. Some Makrana variants may have faint grey lines or a pale pink hue, but they never look yellowish or artificially bright, which is often a sign of dyed or low-quality marble.
2. No Chemical Treatment
Makrana marble is naturally beautiful and doesn’t require any chemical treatment to enhance its appearance. If the marble has an overly shiny, polished look or emits a chemical smell, it’s likely been treated or is not genuine.
3. High Density and Hardness
One of Makrana marble’s best features is its high density and low porosity. Tap gently on the surface—genuine Makrana produces a solid sound. It’s much harder and heavier than artificial or soft marbles. It doesn’t absorb water easily, making it ideal for pooja items, home décor, and flooring.
4. Scratch Resistance Test
Take a metal object or knife and lightly scratch the surface of the marble (preferably on a sample or hidden side). Genuine Makrana marble will not scratch easily because of its high hardness level, unlike synthetic or softer stones that get damaged quickly.
5. Water Absorption Test
Drop a small amount of water on the marble surface. Genuine Makrana marble will not absorb water quickly and the drop will stay on the surface for some time. If the water disappears fast or leaves a damp mark, it might be a porous and low-grade marble.
6. Trusted Source or Vendor
The most important way to ensure authenticity is to buy from a trusted Makrana-based manufacturer or artisan. At Tanwar Marble Handicrafts, we work directly with the mines in Makrana, Rajasthan, and offer genuine marble products handcrafted by local artisans.
7. Price vs. Quality
Authentic Makrana marble is not the cheapest option. If someone offers Makrana marble at very low prices, be cautious. It might be fake, chemically treated, or a lookalike such as Vietnam or Albeta marble.
